What is prompt engineering? A plain-English guide

What prompt engineering really means, why it matters, and the five habits that make any AI tool give better answers.

Prompt engineering sounds technical, but it's really just clear instructions. You're telling a very fast, very literal assistant what you want.

Why it matters

The same AI model can give you a vague paragraph or a ready-to-use result. The difference is almost always the prompt.

The five habits

  1. Give a role. "You are a senior copywriter" sets the level of the answer.
  2. Give context. Who is it for? What's the goal? What already exists?
  3. Be specific about output. Length, format, tone, sections.
  4. Show an example. One good example beats ten adjectives.
  5. Set rules. Say what to avoid, not just what to do.

A quick before and after

Before: Write a product description for my candle.

After: You are an e-commerce copywriter. Write a 90-word description for [PRODUCT_NAME], a soy candle that smells like [SCENT]. Audience: [AUDIENCE]. Warm, simple tone. End with one short line about burn time. No exclamation marks.

Make it reusable

Swap the parts that change for variables like [PRODUCT_NAME]. Now one prompt works forever. That's exactly how every template in our directory is built.
